Foundation Announces Recipients of the Spring 2007 Community Grants Program
May 29, 2007

The Community Foundation of Greater Kingston's Grants Committee is thrilled to announce the recipients of grants from the Spring 2007 session of our Community Fund. Community Funds are the Community Foundation's most flexible funds, composed of many gifts both large and small. Awards are distributed by the Grant Selection Team through an application process.

The following projects have received grants totalling $109,893:

Arts & Culture

Brigantine Inc. - St. Lawrence II: Memories
This grant will go toward a documentary for audiences who have an interest in Kingston's historic waterfront and her very own Tall Ship, the St. Lawrence II. The film will encompass biography, history and adventure.
$10,000 from the Barton Community Fund

Irish Famine Association - Celtic Youth Band
The Celtic Youth Band will teach young participants how to play an instrument, and allow them to participate in an active musical group.

$2,400 from the For Kids... Forever Fund

H'art School of Smiles - H'art Beat Kingston Adult Inclusive Dance Project
This project will provide three weekly classes for dance and movement for any adult in the community with a disability for six months.

$2,000 from the Community Fund

Thousand Islands Playhouse - Young Company Summer Workshops & Tour
The Playhouse will augment their theatrical offerings with workshops aimed at children at risk in the Kingston area, and will offer a greater number of free performances during July and August.

$3,000 from the Marion Meyer Opportunity Fund

Greater Kingston Sweet Adelines - Sweet Adeline International Competition
This grant will assist the chorus in paying for their professional coaching sessions for the competition, in which they will be one of the only two choirs representing Canada this fall.

$6,000 from the Tragically Hip Community Fund

Theatre Kingston - Barefoot Players Summer Children's Theatre
This grant will ensure that 10 financially disadvantages children will be able to attend one full week of workshops with the Barefoot Players.

$1,000 from the For Kids... Forever Fund

Sexual Assault Crisis Centre Kingston - Library Update and Expansion
This grant will allow for the update of library materials, including new books, new DVDs, and VHS to DVD conversion to improve the facility.

$3,800 from the Marion Meyer Opportunity Fund

St. George's Cathedral - First Capital Days 2007 Choral Concert
A major choral event will take place during First Capital Days (June 15 to July 1), which will function as a contribution to cultural life in the city at a time when visitors and tourists are beginning to arrive.

$1,000 from the Community Fund

Education and Literacy

Canadian Diabetes Association - Director of Community Resources
The directory of community resources will be revised and updated to include many links available for the Kingston area, including educational information, and links to health-related services.

$4,500 from the Tragically Hip Community Fund

Junior Achievement of Eastern Ontario - ESIS Expansion Project
The ESIS (Economics of Staying in School) program will provide a one-day program designed to help Grade 8 students develop a positive attitude towards education, while recognizing the financial costs of living on their own.

$3,500 from the Alcan Endowment Fund

KidsFest Canada - Kingston Adding 2 Schools
KidsFest uses running and reading as vehicles to mentor and build self-esteem, by providing the building blocks necessary for elementary-aged students to break the vicious cycle of generational poverty.

$1,863 from the Cameron & Laurie Thompson Fund

Limestone Learning Foundation - Count Me In!
Count Me In! is an innovative, multi-site project aimed to raise the levels of numeric skills in elementary school children. Students and their parents will be provided with interesting "math in a bag" type learning materials.

$2,500 from the Cameron & Laurie Thompson Fund

Limestone Learning Foundation - Camp Read-a-Lot
This camp is a summer remedial literacy program to provide a structured but fun way for children who are struggling or reluctant readers to strengthen their literacy skills.

$5,000 from the Kingston Whig-Standard Literacy Fund

Environment

Brownfields Book Working Group - Research for the Brownfields Book
A graduate study will be completed, researching the case history of a number of well-known brownfields sites in Kingston.

$1,000 from the Environmental Legacy Fund

Cataraqui Conservation Foundation - CRCA Acquisition of Bayview Wetland
This grant will help towards the Foundation's goal of purchasing 700 acres of property of extreme ecological importance, called the Bayview Wetland.

$5,000 from the Ruth & Stu Barton Environmental Fund

Rideau Waterway Land Trust Foundation - Rock Dunder Comfort Station
A comfort station will be constructed at Rock Dunder, a 250-acre conservation area. As the trail is being utilized by more and more hikers, this comfort station will benefit the area and make visits more enjoyable.

$4,120 from the Community Fund

Health and Social Services

K3C Community Counselling Centres - Art Therapy for Women with Breast Cancer
Two weekly art-based support groups for women with breast cancer are being established, to provide a source of comfort, and to enhance the quality of life of affected women in our community.

$3,520 from the Barton Community Fund

Kingston Community Health Centres - Peer Support Initiative
The peer support model in Kingston will restore a sense of dignity and self-worth to members of the community who are unlikely to seek help by themselves.

$5,000 from the Tragically Hip Community Fund

Theraputic Paws of Canada - Theraputic Pet Visitation Program
This grant will allow TPOC to recruit and train through workshops that educate and support volunteer efforts. The outcome will be better preparing the dogs, to promote well-being in the aging community.

$700 from the Community Fund

Heritage Preservation

Friends of the Phoebe - Phoebe Mobile Exhibit
A mobile exhibit will be created to promote understanding of Kingston's cultural infrastructure, and to help interpret the history of the steam launch Phoebe.

$2,150 from the Community Fund

Township of North Frontenac - Cloyne Pioneer Cemetery
Community members are volunteering their time to help in the improvement of the condition of the Cloyne cemetery, and this grant govers the financial portion of the project, while volunteers supply plants, labour, and fence rails.

$4,800 from the Tragically Hip Community Fund

Wolfe Island Business & Tourism Association - Descriptive Plaques for W.I. Murals
With this grant, four historical plaques will be purchased for the murals that will be completed this summer.

$2,100 from the Barton Community Fund

Recreation

Community Response to Neighbourhood Concerns - Shannon Park Splash Pad
This project will improve the quality of life for families in North Kingston by giving them a free, fun and well-maintained water playground..

$10,000 from the For Kids... Forever Fund

Kingston Gets Active - Community Physical Activity Activators
This program will increase awareness and access to physical activity information, and encourage citizens of Kingston and the surrounding area to become more active.

$1,500 from the Davies Foundation Flow-Through Fund

Limestone Learning Foundation - Shutter Bugs & Licking Slugs
This photo-ecology project will have students explore and interact with the environment in a hands-on way using digital photography. It will benefit approximately 3,000 students in the first year.

$2,000 from the For Kids... Forever Fund

Youth

Big Brothers Association of Kingston - Go Girls
Go Girls is a mentoring program that encourages participation in physical activity, healthy eating, and the development of positive self-image among girls 12-14 years old.

$6,500 from the Sunnyside Childrens' Foundation Endowment Fund

Boys & Girls Club of Kingston & Area - Sporty Girls Program
New sports equipment will allow female members to participate in sports without the fear of being self-conscious, hurt, or judged. They will have sports classes specifically for females. The Sporty Girls program empowers the female members.

$2,500 from the Alcan Endowment Fund

Limestone Learning Foundation - A.L.L. (Active Living for Life) Guys 2007
A one-day event to be held at St. Lawrence College, A.L.L. Guys will promote healthy, active living in adolescent males (grades 6-8).

$2,440 from the Cameron & Laurie Thompson Fund

Brigantine Inc. - Sailing Youth Through Life
This grant will provide financial assistance to 25 youth who will have the opportunity to take part in a sail training experience on the St. Lawrence II.

$10,000 from the Barton Community Fund

The Community Foundation of Greater Kingston helps charities accomplish their good work by making financial grants. Donations are pooled in a permanent endowment fund, and interest income earned is used to make grants.
